Intelligent routing: why route planning should start in your ERP

Intelligent routing isn't only about the algorithm. Connecting route planning to NetSuite, SAP, Dynamics, Sage or Xero removes re-keying and closes the order-to-delivery loop.

When people talk about intelligent routing, they usually mean the optimiser. But the biggest gains often come from what surrounds it: getting accurate orders in, and getting delivery results back out.

The re-keying problem

In many operations the day looks like this: orders are exported from the ERP, tidied in a spreadsheet, imported or typed into a route planner, printed, delivered, and then the paperwork is keyed back into the ERP. Every handover is a chance for an error, and every error costs a credit note, a re-delivery or an unhappy customer.

What an integrated flow looks like

  1. Orders sync automatically for today and tomorrow, with customers and addresses kept in step.
  2. Planned orders are protected, so a late change in the ERP can't silently move an order that's already on a truck.
  3. Routes are optimised using order weights, pallet counts and delivery dates from the ERP.
  4. Each delivery writes back delivered quantities and proof of delivery as the driver completes the stop.
  5. Failures are visible and retried, rather than lost in a log file.

Every ERP is different

Each ERP models delivery differently. NetSuite fulfils sales orders through Item Fulfillments. Business Central updates ship quantities and posts the shipment. Sage 200 records despatch receipts. Xero has no sales orders at all, so invoices drive deliveries. An integration has to respect each system's own way of doing things.

It also has to respect each customer's configuration: custom fields, which date means "delivery date", and whether weights are in kilograms or pounds.

Intelligent routing, end to end

Fleetnyx connects to NetSuite, SAP S/4HANA, Dynamics 365 Business Central, Sage 200 and Xero, and to any ERP with API documentation. Orders become routes, routes become deliveries and deliveries go straight back to your ERP. That's what we mean by intelligent routing, effortless delivery.
